Peak Moment
Recently, I happily stumbled upon a production called Peak Moment, a television program focused mainly on the topic of sustainability and what is likely to happen in the post-oil world.
I just fell in love with this program! Thankfully, you can see all of their episodes online, so I’ve been watching one each morning as I get ready for work. Here are a few of my favorites:
Episode 87: How Much Food Can I Grow Around My House?
I love this woman! She’s growing some sixty crops in her backyard and has the most incredible rain water catchment system! I’ve watched this episode three times trying to soak in all of the catchment system information. How clever! I would have liked to see more of her garden, but the rain water collection she is doing has me planning out a whole new system in our backyard. (My one lone rain barrel makes me feel altogether quite inferior. I have some work to do!)
Episode 57: Conserve First! Saving Energy in the Home
This is another episode I’ve watched more than once. Knowing that someone reduced their household consumption to such a degree is humbling, to say the least. Especially when we decided to check our own consumption to see how it compared to the national average. We were shocked and dismayed to see that we are right on par with the rest of America in our household energy consumption, despite our affinity for compact flourescent light bulbs and keeping our programmable thermostat set for 62 degrees when we’re away or asleep. Looks like we have a LOT of changes to make if we really want to walk the walk, and especially if we want to live off grid one day, which is my dream.
I also gained a new respect for the host of this show during this episode. She has lived off grid since the 80s, and her household energy usage is in the area of 3 kilowatts per day. All I can say is Wow! (At first, I thought the host was annoying and wondered how the heck SHE got that job when I would LOVE to have it! Can you imagine? It sounds like my dream job to meet these intelligent pioneers and pick their brains to learn how they started and how they do what they do. But, she’s walking the walk, too. She really knows her stuff!)
Episode 51: An Experiment in Back Yard Sustainability
In this episode, we meet someone who is attempting to grow all of the food for his family for a year on their rental property. I’d love to follow this experiment he’s conducting to see how they fared. We do get a good look at his garden here, and learn what he’s growing and why.
I have many many episodes to go before I get through them all, and I absolutely love that they are being shared online so that we can all see them. What a great program!
